When we think about fitness, body image is the first thing that comes to mind.  While it’s important both psychologically and physically to maintain a healthy figure with more lean body mass than fat mass, there is so much more to fitness than just losing weight.

Fitness is about feeling good.  It’s also about leading a life that is exciting, fulfilling, rewarding and full of adventure.

The first step in your fitness journey is to find an exercise program that you enjoy doing and that fits your schedule.  There are many exercise programs online and offline, but not all of them will be well suited to your interests or your fitness level (if you’re just starting out after a long break, then you will want to choose a program that’s not extremely vigorous).  The only way to find out which program you enjoy the most is to try out a few different programs.  It will also make all the difference to partake in an exercise program with like-minded individuals who are friendly, open-minded and supportive.  Not only will you be motivated to continue with your workout program, you will feel good on the inside and that will reflect on the outside.  In turn, you will feel more energetic, which will help you eat better, sleep better, perform better at work and in your other daily activities, as well as cope better with stress.  It’s a ripple effect.

The next step in your fitness journey is to set goals that are realistic.  There are ‘so-called’ fitness experts who claim that you can lose several pounds or reduce the appearance of cellulite in as little as two weeks.  Realistically that’s impossible to achieve, especially if you are not conditioned to vigorous exercise.  You will only set yourself up for failure if you try to meet that goal.  Exercise, combined with a healthy and balanced diet with minimal salt, sugar and saturated fat, is the key to weight loss.  Even so, it can take up to six months to obtain the desired results.

A diet that’s all organic and balanced can be difficult to maintain as it’s all too easy to slip back into old habits and it’s not always easy to attend an exercise program 2-3 times or more per week if you already have a busy schedule.  But if you are persistent, focused and dedicated to your fitness and health goals, you will obtain those much sought after results.  Keep in mind, though that results will happen when you are putting in the time and effort and are not obsessing over your body image.
